Plan the stages before choosing a start date
A bathroom remodel has a construction schedule and a preparation schedule. They are connected, but they are not the same. Choosing fixtures, confirming dimensions and coordinating materials should happen before demolition whenever possible. The time required depends on the actual scope; a cosmetic refresh and a layout change should not share a one-size-fits-all promise.
1. Confirm the layout and product dimensions
Decide whether the toilet, vanity, tub and shower will remain in their current positions. Check the dimensions of the products you plan to buy, including door swings, drawers and the space needed to use them. A vanity that fits the wall may still conflict with a door or an existing plumbing connection. Share product specifications before ordering.
2. Establish who supplies what
Write down which party purchases tile, fixtures, vanity, lighting and shower glass. Confirm availability and the order in which those items are needed. Ask the glass supplier when final measurements should be taken; a finished opening can differ from the original measurements. Avoid treating an estimated delivery date as a confirmed installation date.
3. Review the room after removal
Once old materials are removed, the contractor can assess surfaces and concealed conditions. Repairs, layout changes and trade work belong ahead of finish installation. If additional work is identified, review its cost and effect on the sequence before proceeding. Ask how required inspections fit the agreed plan.
4. Prepare the shower and finish surfaces
Waterproofing, tile setting and grouting involve product-specific installation and curing requirements. The schedule should allow the specified time between stages. A tiled shower is not necessarily ready for use as soon as the last tile is installed. Ask your installer when the finished system can be put into service.
5. Install fixtures and complete the walkthrough
The final stage can include vanity and fixture installation, glass, accessories, paint and adjustments. At the walkthrough, review door operation, drainage, visible finish details and any remaining items. Keep a written list so completion is clear to everyone.
Can you stay home during a bathroom remodel?
Often the key question is whether another working bathroom is available. If this is your only bathroom, discuss access and temporary arrangements before demolition. Tell your contractor about children, work-from-home needs and any dates when the room must be available.
