Dream Space planning guide
A clear flooring estimate starts with measured floor area and an honest list of additional work. You can prepare a useful first measurement with a tape measure and a simple room list.
01 · Planning step
Measure each room separately
Record the length and width in feet for each rectangular room. Multiply length by width to get square feet. A room measuring 20 ft by 15 ft has 300 sq ft of floor area. Keep the original dimensions in your notes so they can be checked later.
02 · Planning step
Break an irregular room into rectangles
For an L-shaped space, sketch two non-overlapping rectangles and calculate them separately. Add their areas together. Avoid counting an adjoining hallway or doorway area twice. Photos and a simple sketch are useful when the room shape is complicated.
03 · Planning step
Separate area from material ordering
Measured floor area is not a complete product order. Product size, layout and cuts can affect the quantity required. Confirm the ordering allowance with the installer before purchasing. Do not add an invented waste percentage to the labor calculator.
04 · Planning step
Keep stairs and preparation visible
Flat-floor area does not price stairs, trim, transitions, removal, subfloor repairs or leveling. List those items separately. Known moisture or unevenness should be discussed before a new floor is selected.
05 · Planning step
Use the correct rate and scope
This planning tool uses $3.75 per sq ft for vinyl installation labor and $3.25 for laminate installation labor. At 300 sq ft, those figures are $1,125 and $975. Flooring products and additional work are separate. The $3.50 carpet-with-foam allowance requires product confirmation.
Common planning questions
Do I deduct every cabinet or doorway?
Record the actual room layout and installed floor footprint. Discuss built-ins, closets and thresholds before the final measured quantity is agreed.
Can I combine several rooms in the calculator?
Yes, for one consistent flooring scope, add the measured areas. Keep different products, stairs and additional preparation separate for review.
